Digital ecosystem for MASP
This project was carried out for the MIP discipline: Design for Digital Environments, with the thematic axis “problems of the main museums in São Paulo”. Our final product was a digital ecosystem - an application for iOS and interfaces for totems - whose main functionalities are: being able to vote which works from the collection will be exhibited, in addition to being able to find out more about the works, artists and exhibitions on display.

The problem
How are these works selected?
"Due to physical limitations, just over 1% of the museum's collection is currently on display."
CASA VOGUE, 2020
Desk Research: key learnings
INTERACTIVITY IN MUSEUMS
"The use of responsive interfaces, lights, projections, buttons, sounds and screens can become an important means of mediating visitor knowledge and engagement."
RICCA, 2019
CURADORIA
"Exhibitions are a way of resisting pressures toward an increasingly uniform experience of time and space, keeping the visitor in the artistic moment for a little longer."
Paths of Curation - Hans Ulrich Obrist
50,7%
Quando passo na frente do MASP, raramente entro para visitar o museu.
71.6%
He demonstrated a high level of interest in learning about the other 99% of the works.
88.1%
I didn't know that MASP currently only exhibits 1% of its works.
Idea that the permanent collection doesn't change "I've been there once and I won't go back"
Difficulty understanding the logic behind organizing the fixed collection
MASP lacks accessibility, in the sense that everyone knows that the museum is for everyone.
Voting in digital environments for people who are not in MASP.
Curating is work that is generally done together, although many curators are resistant to external collaboration.
Education (not just formal) of the public is important for understanding and making better use of the exhibition.
Although not explored, public participation in the process of building an exhibition could be a possible idea.
Learnings
Need for more horizontal curation, with collaboration from the population on some scale;
MASP is not inviting; visitors do not feel like they belong;
Museum education can be more effective;
The masp experience is unremarkable and often confusing.
Personas
Wireframes: application and totem
-
From the research, we began to think about digital solutions to solve the problem of lack of belonging and inclusion in the curation process.

Service ecosystem
The final solution was an ecosystem of an app and kiosks within the subway and inside MASP.
Among the functions of the app are:
-
Functionality to vote on artworks for exhibition in the museum;
-
Artist pages, providing information about the artworks;
-
Functionality to scan a QR Code of the museum's artworks and learn more about the piece.
Among the functions of the museum totem are:
- Functionality to vote on works for exhibition at the museum;
- Artists ' pages, with information about the works;
Among the functions of the subway totem are:
- Functionality to vote on works for exhibition at the museum;
- Information about MASP, such as timetables, ticket prices, schedule, among others.

User testing
The tests were carried out using the figma prototype and two functionalities were tested:
the voting flow of works;
the functionality of scanning a work in the museum.

Iterations
Changed the button to generate more works to vote more times after user comments about doubts about whether they can only vote once.
